Acanthus Holden is an award winning architectural practice based in Pembroke, West Wales providing inspiring Architectural Design services combined with Historic Building Consultancy, Passivhaus Design, Principal Designer Services, Project Management and Planning Consultancy.
Acanthus Holden can provide both architectural and planning services for projects, a desirable and streamlined combination for many clients. This combination works particularly well on sensitive sites where a planning approach integrated with an intelligent design based solution can really pay dividends.
The practice has provided comprehensive design services that extend from inception to completion on site for more than 25 years. The practice is also acknowledged as one that pursues an environmentally sensitive and sustainable approach to projects and has experience of working on BREEAM and Passivhaus schemes. There are two Conservation Architects in the practice and the Practice has considerable experience on working on listed buildings.
Acanthus Holden is well known throughout West Wales for its commitment to design through the conservation and creative re-use of redundant buildings as well as the design and integration of new buildings in sensitive environments. The Practice has also designed a number of important sustainable buildings. Through offering both planning and architectural services, Acanthus Holden has the ability to consider not only the design and immediate setting of any building, but also its impact on the wider environment.

Our Services
Architectural Design
- As architects we understand the importance of good design and as such believe that the initial design stages of a project are of critical importance. Following the formulation of the project brief and the correlation of survey information, we will embark on a design exercise working closely with the client using successful precedent, hand sketches, computer aided design and a range of models to develop the design.
Architectural Conservation
- The office has a long history of involvement with historic buildings and has developed a methodologies for their sensitive repair and adaptation. A portfolio of differing historic projects has enabled the practice to gain a detailed understanding of traditional building techniques and knowledge of long term material performance. Mark is a Conservation Architect, accredited under the RIBA & Peter Holden is accredited with AABC (Architects Accredited in Building Conservation).

Contract Administration
- As contract administrator we will act as an impartial representative between the two parties and ensure that the selected contractor carries out the works in accordance with the information package provided. Following the introduction of the CDM 2015 regulations, it is now a government requirement that most projects require the appointment of a Principal Designer to plan, manage and monitor Health and Safety during the pre construction work stages. Acanthus Holden Architects can offer this role in compliance with CDM15.
Our team
Now with 6 architecturally trained staff, the office is one of the largest architectural practices in Wales outside of Cardiff and South-east Wales. Staff are encouraged to cycle to work and all take maximum advantage of the surrounding environment and the nearby Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
Emma graduated from the University of the West of England in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies. Since then, she has built an extensive portfolio of experience in architectural and planning matters, contributing to the development and management of several projects, including the notable Cardigan Market Hall, which opened in 2024.

Born in Lincolnshire, James is a degree qualified Senior Architectural Technologist who has additionally completed his Part 1 Architectural training via Oxford Brookes University. Since Graduating in 2004 he has a built up experience working on and helping deliver a wide variety projects from Castles to bespoke houses and Commercial developments. In his free time James enjoys exploring different cultures through music, surfing and travelling with his family.

Bethan graduated from Cardiff University with a BSc (Hons) in 2023 followed by her master’s in 2025, and is now working toward her qualifications as a registered architect. She brings a keen eye for detail across projects within the office, with a particular interest in conservation and interior design, having primarily worked on a Grade II Listed residential property in Tenby. Outside the office, Bethan loves painting, baking, as well as making the most of the Pembrokeshire Coastline, whether she’s out on the RIB, exploring the coast path or spending time on the beach.

Tracy Wheeler
Practice Administrator
Qualified from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in 1980. Since then he has practised in and around West Wales specialising in Conservation, the creative re-use of old buildings and the design of new in sensitive settings. He was a board member of the AABC (Architects Accredited in Building Conservation) and since 2003 has been accepted as a member of the Association of Project Managers. Peter is a keen surfer and sailor, whose local knowledge of the Pembrokeshire coast line is second to none.

Brian graduated with honors from the Dublin School of Architecture in 2010 and has over 20 years experience in the construction industry. While working in Dublin, Brian gained extensive experience in hotel, urban & residential design. Since joining Acanthus Holden in 2013, Brian has worked on a variety of projects and has recently qualified as a certified Passive House designer, assisting the practice’s fabric first, towards net zero approach to design. In his spare time, Brian talks about triathlons and also coaches and teaches swimming for his local triathlon club.

Mark is a Director and RIBA Conservation Architect. Mark completed his BA and professional qualification through Kingston University in 2000 and returned to Pembroke in 2009. Mark has extensive experience in hospitality, high end housing and developer housing, bringing also the additional skills of a conservation architect. When not in the office Mark is often found enjoying the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park beaches with his growing family.

Luke is currently studying towards a degree in Construction Management at University of Wales. He has gained several years of experience working across multiple architectural practices, while also broadening his experience through a year of charitable work abroad. Luke brings a developing knowledge of construction, design, and project delivery to the team. In his spare time, Luke enjoys playing, discussing, and living the football life, while working towards a personal goal of exploring the world through travel.
